Turkey’s Higher education system

Since 2012, compulsory education in Turkey lasts 12 years and is

divided in three stages:

Primary education

Elementary education

Secondary education

 

 

Pre-primary School Education:

Age group: 3 to 5

Duration: 2 years

Optional for all

Tuition fee: Low tuition fees at the state schools

 

Primary Education:

Age group: 6 to 10.

Duration: 4 years

Grades: 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th grades

Compulsory for all citizens

Tuition fee: Free at the State schools

 

Elementary Education:

Age group: 10 to 14

Duration: 4 years

Grades: 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th grades

Compulsory for all citizens

Tuition fee: Free at the State schools

 

Note: Towards the end of the elementary school, pupils are given information about:

both general, vocational and technical high schools

and the kinds of employment they prepare for.

 

 

Secondary Education:

High schools of a general or vocational and/or technical character

Age group: 14 to 17

Duration: 4 years

Grades: 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th grades

Compulsory for all citizens

Tuition fee: Free at the State schools
